Classes for 2014-2015

"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

Physical Science

This year students will explore the fascinating world of Physical Science, which is the study of matter and energy.  Physical Science is a combination of two branches of science---Chemistry and Physics.  Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition, structure, and interactions of matter.  Physics is the study of the relationship between matter and energy.

Chemistry

Chemistry I is a laboratory science course in which students investigate the composition of matter and the physical and chemical changes it undergoes. Students use science process skills to study the fundamental structure of atoms, the way atoms combine to form compounds, and the interactions between matter and energy. Students explore chemistry concepts through an hands-on approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Mathematics, and Technology & Engineering are taught in the context of the this course.

Biology

Biology will expose students to all of the exciting aspects of life. We will explore the living organisms of our planet, starting at the molecular level and working our way up through the six “Kingdoms of Life.” Students will develop the dispositions to use the skills, abilities, and attitudes associated with biology and science in general. Students will use science and technology throughout this course.

Advanced Biology

Advanced biology is a rigorous college preparatory course. Advanced biology is a lab-based science course following the successful completion of 9th/10th grade Biology.  This course will provide both review and in-depth exploration of major topics in biology.  These topics include: genetics, ecology, cellular biology, energy transformation, properties of life, development, evolution, environmental issues, and anatomy/physiology.
